Poster for 'Kick-Ass'
Our sequence can be compared to opening sequences of other superhero films which fit into the genre in one way or another. It can be compared to films such as ‘Kick-ass’ which have a similar opening sequence. ‘Kick-ass’ starts off with the protagonist walking into school which shows how the main character is perceived by others around him. It gives the audience an insight as to what social class he fits into and we can summarise how he is meant to be shown in the film. Similarly we have taken the idea of walking into school and adapted it to show the audience how our protagonist is quiet and alone which creates a mysterious persona for the character much like other superhero films. ‘Batman Begins’, another superhero film has a dark beginning to create a dark atmosphere for the rest of the movie. However the film has a different beginning to our superhero opening.
I stuck to the conventions of a superhero film by having a cliché superhero vibe to it. The scene starts with an experimental father which is different to many other superhero films but still has the thought of science incorporated into it keeping to classic superhero films like ‘The Hulk. The setting of the school is used in many superhero films such as ‘Spider-man’ and ‘Kick-ass’ but we avoided the typical geek persona of the protagonist. We chose to not to develop this typical convention as we wanted our superhero film to stand out, by making it the same as majority of the other superhero films have this persona. Such as Kick-ass and Spider-man, by changing it to something different we hope to attract the audience by the interesting change.
