A more annotated and detailed storyboard was created for the full product, it included different shots and the duration of the shot unlike the preliminary task were there was just a script written onto lined paper and shots were made up on the spot. This meant the preliminary task had a less prepared production which made it harder to think of an effective shot.

In the full product we used tripods and professional angles and shots to create a fluent and linear narrative unlike the preliminary task were we filmed by hand and had only 2 or 3 different shots. In the preliminary task we did not edit the piece using iMovie and didn’t include effects or music. On the other hand the final piece for the full product has been fully edited more than once till it was perfect. This included editing so the final piece had special FX like fading in and out which is seen in between the Lab scene and the School scene.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

During my time in constructing the product, I have learnt and improved on using the camera. This is clearly seen in my media product as different shots such as pans and tilts are used effectively. My positioning of the camera has been improved as we can see from various scenes such as the school scene where we position it carefully to include different characters and obstacles and use as much of the scenery as possible so it isn’t wasted. My work in front of the camera has also improved as I am the main character and had to look mysterious and shady. From the different body languages we’ve seen in different programs it helped when performing as the character as I knew what and how to perform it. My editing skills have improved due to the work done on the Macs and using iMovie. The editing we used were cuts and FX which was taught and used in the movie. Sounds and volumes had to be edited to make sure some sounds weren’t overpowering others, for example to make sure the music used wasn’t too loud and faded out in time for when the sequence started. My skills in production work have improved since the start of the course as I prepared the media sequence with a written script and storyboard which were annotated and completed to a professional standard. Examples such as the Star Wars script helped to see the professional layout of a script. However I could improve my work with the use of technology as there were some moments which created mistakes in our movie such as a stiff tripod which was seen in part of the movie and needed to be edited so it wasn’t noticed. Also errors such as opening and closing of the doors needed to be changed and edited so it wasn’t as noticeable.

The mise-en-scene used should be appealing to the target audience as it has dramatic music which appeals to the teenagers who are looking to watch a serious, thrilling film which has a serious message to it. The school setting and costumes would appeal to the audience who are still in school or have been previously. Fans of science and science fiction will be appealed by the idea of a mad scientist as it has their likes involved in the media product. The audience feedback shows that the male teenagers were interested in the film and found the idea of a Bin original and innovative. The decision of putting the video on youtube was successful as youtube is used by a whole internet audience which means the video has potential to be seen by many people. Feedback is left in comments and likes and dislikes are clearly shown which gives us and idea of how well the media product is seen and if the audience have a negative or positive reaction to it.

Picture of The Hulk in his famous Lab Scene

The audience for our media product would be kids and teenagers, mainly male. This is due to the main character being a male teenager who is still at school which would be easy for the teenagers and kids to relate to as they are still in school. Also our film will attract the male audience due to it having action packed scenes and villains. We believe that the scientific background and the setting of a lab will attract more people who may have enjoyed the films such as The Hulk and Spider-Man which feature science and superpowers in one film.

The media product does seem to be limited to a certain audience but the seriousness and drama throughout the product will appeal to the audience. The psychographic factors that will appeal to the audience would be an audience who like superhero films or science fiction films. After putting the media product onto youtube, the audience reaction for our product were teenagers and mainly male.
A main reason that superhero films are largely popular is that they are a form of escapism. Audiences enjoy escaping the real world for a fantasy film and enjoying the ride.

I would choose 20th Century Fox to distribute out product. Big media institutions such as 20th century fox would distribute our products as it is a superhero movie. Most superhero movies are blockbusters which are distributed worldwide such as 'Batman' and 'Spider-man'. Also they have released top box office films such as Ice Age and The Omen, this shows the different range of films they produce and how all are worldwide releases. The movie genre has potential to distribute products and merchandise which would help build the popularity of the film. As the film would have some special effects the budget would help cover these costs and effects. However our film distributors can also be linked with Marvel Studios who we have used at the start of our product such as X-Men who colloborated with Marvel and 20th Century Fox to produce the film.(Trailer below)
The media product would be distributed worldwide as it can appeal to the American audience just like other superhero films. British audience would like the film as it has an English setting so it is relatable, the English character would appeal to the English audience. The best way to distribute our product is internet first to start to build an audience which gradually grows through adverts and word of mouth. A big build up till the launch of the film would help to sell the product as a whole.

Our media product contains males including the ‘Scientist’ and the main character which are both males. At the start of the sequence the Father/Scientist is shown experimenting on a baby which shows him in a bad light as it shows him neglecting his child. We have chosen to represent him like this as we are trying to portray him as a evil character and clearly shows the insane side to him. The protagonist is shown as calm and collective (as you can see in Fig.1) however he is also late for school and alone which could stereotype teenagers for not showing any effort in school or not being punctual so it also shows the main character in a bad light. We chose to represent him like this as he is mysterious and lonely and shows how he doesn’t tell anyone about his powers making the audience sympathize for him. This could be seen as a positive stereotype as he persists on going to school even though he is portrayed as lonely and mysterious. He doesn’t start a fight with the teacher coming round the corner, instead he avoids the situation which gives the main character a positive outlook on him. A negative stereotype is the school kid (Fig.2) who is seen with his shirt out and tie low down, this is a negative stereotype as it could be seen as a common school kid who rebels in this way. This could show the social group of ‘School kids’ as ill mannered and rude which is similar to shows like waterloo road who portray school kids in a bad light, such as kids doing drugs and having fights.

Poster for 'Kick-Ass'
Our sequence can be compared to opening sequences of other superhero films which fit into the genre in one way or another. It can be compared to films such as ‘Kick-ass’ which have a similar opening sequence. ‘Kick-ass’ starts off with the protagonist walking into school which shows how the main character is perceived by others around him. It gives the audience an insight as to what social class he fits into and we can summarise how he is meant to be shown in the film. Similarly we have taken the idea of walking into school and adapted it to show the audience how our protagonist is quiet and alone which creates a mysterious persona for the character much like other superhero films. ‘Batman Begins’, another superhero film has a dark beginning to create a dark atmosphere for the rest of the movie. However the film has a different beginning to our superhero opening.
I stuck to the conventions of a superhero film by having a cliché superhero vibe to it. The scene starts with an experimental father which is different to many other superhero films but still has the thought of science incorporated into it keeping to classic superhero films like ‘The Hulk. The setting of the school is used in many superhero films such as ‘Spider-man’ and ‘Kick-ass’ but we avoided the typical geek persona of the protagonist. We chose to not to develop this typical convention as we wanted our superhero film to stand out, by making it the same as majority of the other superhero films have this persona. Such as Kick-ass and Spider-man, by changing it to something different we hope to attract the audience by the interesting change.
